A Letter

Dear Munchkin,

Dr. B says you are too skinny. Please eat more spinach.

Your Friend,
Popeye

(Took the little one to the doc today for his 4 month appointment. He has only gained 1.5 lbs in the last two months, which puts him below the 5th percentile, which, according to Dr. B, is potentially problematic. To combat this--before we run a whole bunch of labs--I am to (force) feed him every 2.5-3 hours....even if he's asleep. Ack. At night, I don't have to intentionally wake him, but if he wakes on his own, I'm supposed to get him up to eat. Double ack. We'll go back to the doc after our Florida vacation. On the upside, Munch only cried for about 10 seconds during his vaccinations. Brave boy.)

Weight: 11lbs, 8.2 oz
Height: 24.5 in
HC: 16.25 in

Dear Munchkin,
OK, so you are little. Don't worry too much. Your auntie Naomi was so little and the doctors did a lot of fretting over her. You'll probably just be tall and skinny like she is. But maybe you should humor them and just go ahead and eat some more.
(Sorry, Mommy).
See you Monday in Livonia. Bring your warm jammies. It's very cold here.
Love,
Your Mimi

Same exact thing happened with Tommy! So stressful and still dealing with it. He kept dropping percentiles and he is sooooo distractable that the only time he will eat is right before and after naps in the chair in his room pitch black - not easy with a 2 year old around. We went to a lactation consultant weekly for awhile and that helped. But T is so active, non stop motion, that his peditrician finally said there is no way to get him to gain weight because he won't stop moving!
Keep it up - you can do it. Let's talk if you need to comiserate.

You make that kid a "boob man" whether he likes it or not!

The thing is, this kid eats like a horse. All my other friends with nursing babies his age are only spending about 10 minutes at each nursing session. S still takes 20-30 minutes--or longer! Go figure.

I'm behind on your blog - *ack* like you need this stress, eh? Not to second-guess your ped, but there's always the high-calorie formula option as a supplement. Try not to worry (ha) -- he's crazy active and alert, and since he has a good appetite, he may just be a slender kid. Being so adorable burns a lot of calories!
